Artificial Reef Project is where our divers restore the reefs with new coral frags and build coral nurseries to help the rejuvenation of coral reef. As a group we visited Koh Rin 4 times last year where Gwen taught us about the significance of coral, how to measure coral progression and how to conserve them. We plan on having monthly trips to clean up the reef, build coral reefs, instal buoys to prevent damage of the restored reefs and overall, raise awareness. During our summer break, we were informed that our coral reef is flourishing and has had 100% success and throughout the year (2016-2017) we will continue to improve our reefs to restore the corals completely. |
Additionally, we have been involving elementary kids in building the artificial reef blocks that are then planted in the ocean. The involvement of these elementary students expand the age range of students that take part in OMG. This increasinlgy raises awarness of our service group and the problem that we address in different communities within NIST. We hope that these students will continue to be involved in our group when they enter middle school. |
